Численность штата преторианских когорт в I–II вв. н.э.

Данная статья посвящена проблеме определения численности штата преторианских когорт в I–II вв. н.э. Вопреки античной нарративной традиции, сообщающей о том, что в штат каждой когорты императорской гвардии входило по 1000 человек, французский историк М. Дюрри привел археологические и статистические аргументы в пользу того, что их размер был вдвое меньше. Его версия получила широкое распространение и поддержку в научной среде. Однако у Дюрри имеется немало оппонентов, настаивающих на достоверности сведений античных авторов и отмечающих неоднозначность выводов, основанных на анализе археологических данных и статистических расчетов, опирающихся на материал преторианских латеркулов. Несмотря на возможность неоднозначных интерпретаций, наиболее простым способом согласовать показания имеющихся источников является признание тысячного статуса преторианских когорт. Единственное существующее препятствие для этого заключается в том, что структура преторианской когорты была характерна для пятисотенных частей, но эта особенность является результатом создания корпуса императорских телохранителей из легионных воинов в эпоху второго триумвирата.
