Катилина и лозунг tabulae novae

Часто считается, что во время своей предвыборной кампании 63 г. до н.э. Катилина использовал лозунг tabulae novae. В статье доказывается, что он не мог прибегнуть к такого рода агитации: поскольку он не был магистратом, то не имел права созывать contio, чтобы предложить tabulae novae, а даже если бы сам Катилина или кто-либо из его сторонников так сделал, это не принесло бы ему пользы, поскольку приходили на собрание обычно лишь обеспеченные люди, располагавшие временем, достатком и желанием посещать его. Кроме того, открытая агитация в пользу tabulae novae нанесла бы ущерб репутации Катилины в глазах правящей элиты, тогда как в его интересах было не раздражать этих людей. Поэтому представляется вероятным, что он мог в частном порядке пообещать своим друзьям известные преференции в случае своего избрания, но не более того. Что же касается сулланских ветеранов, то вполне возможно, что их голосами он заручился не потому, что пообещал им отмену долгов, а благодаря своим личным заслугам
