В статье рассматривается современная историография одного из наиболее известных памятников римской Британии – Адрианова вала. В ее развитии можно выделить два основных направления – увеличение корпуса источников в ходе постоянных археологических исследований и концептуальное переосмысление истории римского лимеса в Британии. Авторы обращают внимание на некоторые дискуссионные темы, занимающие важное место в новейших публикациях, в частности на споры об обстоятельствах сооружения и предназначении Адрианова вала. Отдельно рассматриваются попытки реконструировать социокультурную историю пограничных территорий и идентичности его обитателей.
