Our Great Fathers: A Probable History of One Monastic Litany in Late Antique Egypt

Voytenko Anton A.

The article is devoted to the study of a Coptic epitaph, widely represented in the epigraphy of late antique Egypt. The author draws the conclusion that the epitaph came from the famous Egyptian monastery of apa Apollo (Bawit) and its text was originally a prayer of the funeral service in the monastery. Subsequently, it began to serve as a means of spreading the veneration of the two most famous saints of the Bawit monastery, Apollo and Phib.

Keywords: epigraphy, Egyptian monasticism, Bawit, cult of saints in Late Antiquity
