Античные истоки средневековой картографии: проблема преемственности

В статье рассматривается проблема континуитета между античной и средневеко- вой картографией – проблема, которая до сих пор неудовлетворительно освещена в мировой историографии и по-прежнему остается дискуссионной. Она осложняется тем, что от античной картографии до нас дошло ничтожно мало артефактов, которые свидетельствовали бы о функциях и формах карт. Средневековые карты сохранились в гораздо большем количестве, позволяющем составить подробные классификации различных их видов. Из трех основных видов средневековой картографической продукции, на наш взгляд, один может считаться самостоятельно возникшим в средние века (так называемые морские карты-портоланы), а второй – продолжением античной традиции (так называемые зональные карты Макробия). Сложнее обстоит дело с разного рода mappae mundi, которые многие исследователи склонны выводить из античных (чаще всего, римских) прототипов. Но поскольку последние практически не сохранились, а средневековые mappae mundi содержат многие особенности христианской культуры, оправдан скепсис относительно континуитета в этом виде карт, хотя, как показывает анализ текстов, характерные черты средневековой картографии (например, восточная ориентация трехматериковой схемы Т-О карт) могли восходить к античным географическим описаниям, популярным и в средние века.
