В статье показывается, что если в начале гражданской войны Филипп придерживался нейтралитета и несмотря на это достиг вершины карьеры – цензуры, то на заключительном ее этапе сделал решительный шаг и перешел на сторону Суллы. Автор связывает это не просто с желанием поддержать сильнейшего, а с тем, что во время lectio senatus в 86 или 85 гг. Филипп наверняка вычеркнул Суллу из списков сенаторов и теперь стремился снискать милость будущего победителя и сохранить влияние при его режиме, что ему и удалось. Без этого вряд ли был бы возможен последний взлет Филиппа в 78–77 гг. до н.э.
