Боевые слоны эллинистического Востока: финал истории

Элефантерия была важной, хотя и специфической, частью эллинистических армий с конца IV в. до н.э.; она имела как военное, так и идеологическое значение. После поражения в войне с Римом Селевкиды в 188 г. до н.э. должны были отказаться от своих боевых слонов, но тем не менее продолжали их использовать в течение почти полувека. По мнению автора, римляне не сочли это требование столь же важным, сколь территориальные уступки Селевкидов в Малой Азии, и не настаивали на его неукоснительном выполнении. Таким образом, Селевкиды смогли сохранить свой корпус (способы могли быть различными) хотя бы частично. Он перестал существовать не по инициативе римлян, а во внутренних конфликтах. В свою очередь, это освободило правителей Египта от необходимости содержать свой собственный корпус в качестве противовеса.
