The Doubling in Depth of the Hoplite Phalanx

According to the Hellenistic tactician Asclepiodotus, the basic unit of the phalanx, the λόχος (the ‘squad’) was at some point doubled in size from eight to sixteen hoplites, although he provides no other chronological information. The article argues that the analysis of the sources allows to establish that it was the coalition army of the heavy infantry from Argos, Athens, Boeotia and Corinth that introduced this reform during the war council that took place before the battle of Nemea near Corinth (394 BC), which was “perhaps [the] greatest hoplite battle of classical Greece” (The Oxford Handbook of Warfare in the Classical World).
